The Lottery

"The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson has two main characters, a housewifenamed Tessie Hutchinson, who is the person who wins the lottery at the end,and Mr. Summers, the man who organizes the lottery. Mr. Summers hadbrought the black box for the drawing with all the little white pieces ofpaper in it and he calls everyone up to pick them out. Tessie Hutchisonargues about how the lottery isn't fair and how her husband didn't haveenough time to pick a piece of paper. All of the other characters in thisstory all play a significant role by just saying a few words and by helping The story begins with a description of the beautiful day it isoutside. The very first thing Shirley Jackson tells the reader is whattime of day it is and what time of year the story takes place. The timeof day is set at ten o'clock in the morning an


d the time of year is anearly summer on June 27. The author uses in-depth foreshadowing from the secondparagraph on through the entire story. " In the last scene, Tessie Hutchinson picks the paper form the blackbox that reveals a black dot. The tradition of the lottery was always on June27 every year. grew shabbier each year; bynow it was no longer completely black but with splinters badly along oneside. "The first question we must ask is why are the boys piling stones up in thevillage square' At the very least we know that the stones will play animportant role in the final outcome of the story. The citizens gather for the lottery and waittill everyone arrives. The author does this to try to keep the reader's mind onpositive thoughts about the story instead of feeling that something bad isgoing to happen. The lottery sounds like someone's going to win a prize, but when thereader starts reading the second paragraph it seems like something else isgoing to happen. " Refusing to change atradition, the lottery lives on. Their town is sosmall that it only takes about 2 hours, but in most places it takes 2 days.
