Based on some prevailing political theories, the foundingfathers envisioned a republican democracy. Rather, British officials whohad never visited the New World spoke and made decisions for the colonies. The economic causes for the Revolution had to do with the fact thatthe colonies became extremely profitable. Attempts at peaceful negotiations and changes failed and this led to adeclaration of independence and war. The Crown naturally demandedtheir share of the wealth and demanded high taxes (without duerepresentation in parliament). However, the colonialists deemed thisunfair, basing their arguments on the fact that they were performing allthe work involved in creating profit and yet were seeing no benefitsbestowed by the Crown on the colonies. The masterminds behind the Revolution were ofthe colonial aristocracy, although many history books support the notionthat the Revolution was a grassroots movement. Social causes of the Revolution are more complex than either thepolitical or economic causes. onialists felt completelyremoved from the parliamentary system in London for good reason: they weretotally excluded from direct representation. While many of the people thatorchestrated the Revolution were of the Colonial elite, they neverthelesshad a different vision of the type of country and government they wished tobe a part of. Somerevolutionaries shared a vision of America as being an aristocracy, whileothers envisioned a true democracy in which social class did not impactone's political clout. By the end of the eighteenthcentury, the colonies were fairly heterogeneous; the southern landaristocracy differed greatly from the urbanized seaports of the north.
