Elder Abuse

Due to the innovations in the fields of medicine, science and technologythe life expectancy of an average male and female has increaseddrastically. Many people are living longer and are in a better state ofhealth. However the more old they grow the more they are dependent onothers to take care of their needs. This leads to many problems as itexposes a hidden problem known as elder abuse. There are several cases ofelder abuse reported every year. Due to the extent of the elder abuse, someof the victims tend to die earlier due to the psychological and physicalThere are many elderly people in the world who live by themselves. They areforced to rely on other people to take care of their needs. However aren'tthat simple as them seem. They are often mistreated and abused while beingtaken care of. This form of abuse takes place in the form of any physical,emotional or psychological harm caused to an elderly person. In many casesthis involves the elderly being exploited for financial reasons. This iswhen the caregiver intentionally neglects the elderly person.The abuse of elderly people in any form is known as Elder Abuse. Anythingfrom slapping, shoving, to severe beatin


The rest of theabusers are usually friends, relatives, siblings and health care providers. Young (1995) further writes that there are tell tale tales signs to detectif a victim has been neglected. This shows that elder abuse is a problem, which is morerampant in the domestic sector. She also notes that the majority of the abusers usually lie in theage group of 41 to 59 (39 percent). Due to their difference, it should beknown which law applies to the victim. They do that bydepriving their charge of food, water, clothing, medication and assistance. If they are confrontedabout their problem they deny it as they are scared and are dependent ontheir caregivers. Sometimes the caregiver can commit heartless acts in orderto abuse his/her charge. If people can share their duties and take care of theelderly there will be less stress in their lives. She feels that in this case it could be eitherintentional or unintentional. According to statistics there are about550,000 cases of elder abuse in the United States each year but only asmall number is reported. Young (1995) points out: "The financial abuser and victim are typicallycodependent because of the financial relationship. If there is many company around it canease the problems for the elderly as tensions are reduced drastically. All we need to do is to play our part well and take care of ourresponsibilities.
