vent for mary in frankenstein
Cleverly Disguised for a Female to Grumble and MoanShelley's Gothic novel, Frankenstein, serves as a channel for Shelley's aspiration to see women obtain the same power and control that men had been enjoying for years. Even though the women in this novel are domestic, Shelley slyly decorates women as authoritative and strong beings. The various mistakes of men throughout Frankenstein and the feminine facets of nature that control Victor, reveal Shelley's belief that women are as powerful as men. "In a sly manner, Shelley depicts men as beings that are apt to make several critical mistakes" ("The Feminist Tradition of Mary Shelley and Annette Messager"). Somehow, Victor manages to destroy the lives of everyone one he loves. Frankenstein destroys Justine and Elizabeth's lives by getting the two females killed either by persecution or by the monster. Frankenstein also manages to put his father in complete distress by ignoring the letters and requests to talk. Frankenstein is able to have Clerval and William murdered by the monster. Lastly, Frankenstein destroys his own life by bringing complete distress, physical depletion, and void of loving people. By the end of the book, Frankenstein is desolate, void of everyone he loves
Shelley alludes to the idea that women can help society in so many ways for the better, if they were given a chance. Shelley disguises the idea that men do not learn from their mistakes because Frankenstein did not learn that by destroying the monster would omit the deaths of his loved ones. Shelley is clearly upset with the idea that during her era, women dependent on outside forces, such as males. Ultimately, Frankenstein's plans to control nature fail. Frankenstein is able to dominate a characteristic of nature for a moment, but the awesome power of nature shines through as the monster exerts power over Frankenstein. ("Feminism in Frankenstein") The symbol of nature is throughout Frankenstein. ] the woman's dependence upon outside forces, the fact that they are not characters, but only faces, is why Mary Shelley attempts to overthrow the patriarchal system of dominance in her society" ("Afriad of His Own Wife"). Shelley feels that when men are in the dominate position, that they tend to make repeated fatal errors, such as Frankenstein not destroying his monster which led to a multitude of deaths. ] allowing his own greed and desires to overpower common sense" ("Feminism in Frankenstein"). Victor's creature, his desire, and his greed, all come back to haunt him. Shelley desires for women and men to be equal in almost ever which was possible.
