Comparison of Mary Shelley's writing style in Frankenstein with Harper Lee's style in To Kill a Mocking Bird
When reading the two books 'Frankenstein' by Mary Shelley and 'To killa mockingbird' by Harper Lee, a reader finds it hard to decide which one oftwo has been more fascinating. They are both interesting novels that havegone down in history, and they share several similarities and have plentyof differences as well. The writing styles too, are unique as each of theseauthors has a particular approach to addressing a topic and yet, each makestheir mark through the uses of language. Harper Lee's 'To Kill a Mockingbird' is an interesting piece ofliterature that has been well crafted. The author has used language thatsuits the mind of child, and has in fact put herself in the child's shoeswhere necessary. The perceptions that the writer has poured into thischaracter is very well thought off because it has assumed the imaginationof the child as well as the reality she sees. However, the novel has itsserious sides with the trial and the stabbing scene. This provides therealistic approach aside from the usual depressing lives people lead with Just like there is focus on a man whom people
This is exemplified when she says, "Somehow it was hotter then:a black dog suffered on a summers day; bony mules hitched to Hoover cartsflicked flies in the sweltering shade of the live oaks on the square. The words that she chooses are both of a higher level andyet easy to understand. This quotation exhibits the manner in which the language in thisnovel gradually increases in intensity. Generally, their stylesdiffer because Shelley uses a richer vocabulary almost throughout thenovel, while Lee's word is usage is lower. Lee writes, "Some tin foil was sticking out of a knot- hole just abovemy eye level, winking at me in the afternoon sun. There is a considerable difference in the way that the writers in eachof the books describe their characters. I stood on my tiptoe, hastily looked around once more, reached into the hole, and withdrew twopieces of chewing gum minus their outer wrappers" (Lee, 2003 Page 33). The child, Scout, takes the advice in a literal sense. Ladies bathed before noon, after their three-o'clock naps, and by nightfall were like soft teacakeswith frostings of sweat and sweet talcum" (Lee, 2003 Page 5) Lee's wordselection and usage is such that it helps the reader to get a clear pictureof what she has in her mind, almost forming an image for the reader. '" Page 49 In contrast to Lee's style in 'To Kill a Mocking Bird', Shelley has amore complex style of writing. Butthat would be a cruel kindness, and I dare not do it" ('Frankenstein'etext, 2003).
