Essence of Organizational Behavior Studies and Practice in the Business Environment

Over time, trends in the business environment when it comes tomanagement and organizational structuring have shifted from being technicalor skills-oriented to being interpersonal or relations-oriented. Thesudden change in strategies dealing with management of members within anorganization is influenced by the growing complexity, yet quality, servicesthat organizations must provide for its members for their satisfaction.Satisfaction of organization members is important since most organizationsrely on the productivity of its members. Thus, every member of anorganization must be satisfied with the organization s/he is affiliatedwith in order to ensure productivity, and loyalty, for the organization. Why the sudden shift from skills-oriented to relations-orientedmanagement in organizations' Just as marketing products have shifted frombeing product-oriented to service-oriented, organization management is alsomoving internally, focusing with a greater degree on maintaining goodrelationships among members of the organization. The function of organizational behavior in organizational managementand communication is to improve organizational processes and interaction(among its members), yielding high rates of productivity and quality of theproducts and services offered by the organization. Gone are the days when leaders are considered as the'backbone' of organizations, leading to inequality among an organization'smembers. Reconciling these twoapproaches results to effective organizational management, where thetechnical skills of its members produces high quality products andservices, while loyalty and good interpersonal and group relations amongthe organization's members results to loyalty, motivation, andeffectiveness in accomplishing the tasks that needs to be done. Thus,organizational behavior studies and practice becomes an invaluablemanagement principle in, and develops healthy individual and groupbehaviors within, the organization. A popular example is Michael Dell's (owner of Dell ComputerCorporation) focus of using "obsessive customer focus" and "commitment tointernal organizational processes" as the company's way of dealing withcustomers/clients and members/employees of Dell, respectively. The primary guiding principle that organizational behavior studiessubsists to is that the individual is the essential element oforganizations. As an interdisciplinaryfield of study, organizational behavior touches on several aspects thatgreatly influence individual behavior within an organization, which mayinclude psychological, communication, and sociological studies. Instead, an individual learns to inter-relate eachprocess/step/activity involved in accomplishing the task in order to obtainthe optimum quality service or product that needs to be produced(Churchill, 1995:22-3). Using a technical-skill approach in managing organizations is oftenreferred to as the "Traditional" approach, where the individual conducts anactivity in strictly segmented activities from start to end. Lastly, sociology studies the relationship an individual haswith his/her society, and how this relationship affects the behavior of theindividual towards society and vice versa. This paper discusses the nature, functions, andessence of organizational behavior studies and practice in the field of thebusiness, more particularly, in the work environment. In the psychology, an individual's needs and motivations determinethe kind of interaction and behavior an individual displays in the public. This function illustrates the importance of merging technicaland interpersonal skills when managing an organization.
