Human cloning
There is an increasing awareness about the process of humanreproductive cloning, and this has led to differences on the subjectbetween people. The first actual case of cloning was the cloning of Dollythe sheep by Ian Wilmut and his associates. Earlier the concept of cloninghad been discussed at depth in the area of science fiction literature. Theidea itself had been widely debated through commissions and committees, asthis was viewed largely as an unknown in the area of genetic andreproductive technology. At the time when Dolly took birth, there were 277embryos that had been produced clonally. These finally resulted in only onelive birth, but even she was found to be not very healthy. Her conditiongradually worsened, and finally she had to be put to death recently. Human cloning causes harm in three ways. The greatest harm is causedto the person who is cloned. Secondly, it harms the unit of the family bymaking children unimportant and decreasing the respect for human life.Third, it makes the concept of human reproduction seem cheap andunimportant. The present method of somatic nuclear transfer cloning also is
Cloning could also totallyrevolutionize the treatment for leukemia. (Cibelli, 27) Thishas been seen in the case of animals, which have died very soon after theirbirth. For understanding andcreating treatments for birth defects, the process of cloning may be veryuseful. The process of cloning could alsoimprove the treatment of heart attacks. (Kolata, 4) Thus the obligations of parenthood are only self-imposed and not anobligation imposed on them. Human cloning could expand cosmetic processes. o give rise to a lot of deaths and deformities. (Kolata, 5) Some of the cloned children may not be afflicted with death ordeformity, may be adopted by a loving couple and thus have a family, butthe process of cloning would still be wrong. (Arnest, 68) Once human cloning is perfected, the knowledge can be used for the cloning of other animals. Another advantage of cloning a human being is the total absence ofsexually transmitted diseases according to scientists. The advance of cloning would also helpcancer patients. It is possible that some day we will understand how toget back to age 20 or whatever we want to go back to by the reversal ofDNA. The relationship of the clone to its parents will however be neverthe same as the relationship of a child and its natural parents. (Arnest, 70) Definitely there is an ongoing development in theprocess of cloning. Someoneof them or a totally unrelated person may decide to adopt the cloned child,or the child may have even been cloned to specifically provide someone witha child.
