Computers

In the current world of computers, security has become a major source ofcontention among the industries leaders. Digital security, in particular,is one of the most heated topics of debate, and companies compete daily tooffer the best, most cost effective and practical digital securitysolutions to its consumers. Microsoft is among those companies, and itsdigital security solutions can provide a cost-effective digital securitysolution. At the same time, however, the Microsoft solutions may not bethe best resource for all companies. In general, Microsoft's identity and access management solutionsenable businesses to increase the security of managing digital identities. For example, the Passport single sign-in service allows users to create asingle set of credentials that can be used to access any site that supportsa Passport service. Since the credential information is not held by thecompany accepting the passport, but rather, by Microsoft, the identity

The costs of that deployment can behigh (Santos, 2001). In addition, many of the digital authentication servicesfrom Microsoft are offered in more than 25 languages, allowing for amultitude of customers (Microsoft, 2002). By using Microsoft software, companies can be assured that the development cycle will not go stagnant, and that they will have the latest technology available to them (Microsoft,2003). For example, theirPassport services, designed specifically to increase digital security, wasfound to have a vulnerability that allowed hackers to obtain personalinformation for Passport holders (McCormick, 2003). Still another benefit to using Microsoft's digital security softwareis the continuous upgrades and enhancements. While it is true thatthe use of another companies pre-existing code for security is more costeffective in the beginning than developing one, the possible maintenancefees may be high. One major problem is that Microsoft has recently been underattack for their security flaws, in almost all software they produce, including software designed for security. For example, Microsoft continuously develops new codeand patches that must be deployed. Between the complexity of theirsoftware solutions and the ability to administer their products, Microsofthas left its self open to a variety of security risks. Microsoft is a leadingdeveloper who is constantly trying to develop new and more beneficialsolutions to the digital security issue. Still another possible downside to using Microsoft's digital securityfeatures is that of implementation and maintenance. In addition, Microsoft's digital security solutions are a fairly costeffective way to maintain the security of digital information. Net is a set of tools and servicesthat allows dissimilar and remote systems to talk to each other and swapdata, the concern exists that the consumer's privacy can easily be violated(Santos, 2001). This allows businesses to skip the high costs ofthis service. In a world that survives in large part due to computers, Microsoft isno doubt a leading representative in the industry.
