Carrying out discipline to a child is a critical task in parenting.Controversies and debates as to what should be the proper measures todiscipline a child have surrounded the disciplinary actions taken byparents due to incidences that turned into child abuse. A study showed that most American adults who received spanking duringchildhood do not consider themselves abused (Gray, 2002), hence, theydemonstrate no signs of negative influences of spanking. Davis and Keyser, from their online article Discipline:What Method Really Works', have the following alternative methods to determisbehavior. Psychologists and sociologists recommend other alternativedisciplinary methods that do not involve physical punishment which are safeto a child's physical well being, and which cause less or no negativeeffects at all. * Give only one swat; that's enough to change behavior. A matter of time and patience is usually required tosuccessfully raise a disciplined child.
