Adolescent Choice of Vocation Adolescent Choice of Behavior

I interviewed two adolescents. The first is John, a 20-year old juniorcollege taking up a course of computer engineering, and the other isRachel, an 18 year-old teen working as a waiter in a coffee shop. Inrelevance to knowing what influences made them decide to take the currentvocation they have in life, the following questions were asked to both of * What made you decide to finish your studies' / What made you decide to choose work over your studies' Is it your choice' * Who influenced you to continue your studies/to take that course in college' / Who influenced you to work rather than studying' * Are you happy and satisfied with the life that you have now' * If given the choice now, do you want to do something else with yourUsing these questions, following are the information I gathered based fromthe course of separate interviews I conducted with them.On John, the 20-year old Computer Engineering StudentJohn decided to finish his studies because he wants to achieve success o

utof his own hard work later in life. Comparing again the situations of John and Rachel, we can conclude thatthe environment (the innovations that John sees around, and the friendsaround Rachel) affects their vocational choices. He is especially fascinated with how computers play amajor role in the continuous evolution of technology. After finishing high school, she decided to get a job to be ableto help her family. Rachel, on the otherhand, cannot study because she cannot afford it. Rachel hopes that by working, she can start saving money for hercollege next school year. She is a teen who, like any otheryouth, wishes to study, earn a degree in college, and be among thesuccessful ones. It was his will to bein college, to aim for a degree and diploma that every youth is wishingfor. However, Rachel's family cannot afford to keep herstudies. On the other hand, because Rachel cannot affordto study, her decision of working was influenced by her friends around her. In another aspect, John's course is computerengineering because the technology that he sees in hisenvironment inspires him. Though Rachel is not among the lucky ones whoseparents can support their children's schoolings, Rachel is still happy withher life. On Rachel, the 18-year old Working TeenWorking is not Rachel's first choice. John is fascinated by the state-of-the-art innovations the currenttechnology brings.
