GREENEST CAMPUSES

Role of campuses in Environmental protectionEnvironment protection is one of the most burning issues these days withpeople complaining about the negative effects of various business andsocial activities on ecology. In this connection, green movement activitiesand environmentalists around the globe are urging people to pay closerattention to the consequences of many activities with may even appearharmless on the surface. Urban areas are the special victims ofenvironmental destruction. Orr (19991) writes: "It is becoming increasinglyapparent that our present environmental crisis is evidence of a priorfailure of mind and perception- which is to say, a failure of education. The loss of species, topsoil, rain forests, and impending climate change arenot primarily technological problems or even economic ones. They are firstand foremost about how we think about the world we inhabit". However whilewe do know how cities are contributing to destruction of ecology, we simplyfail to understand how colleges and

Noel Perrin maintains that ignorance of colleges and universities regardingtheir role in ecology preservation can pose a serious threat to theenvironment in the long run since these places are usually denselypopulated and lack of sustainability programs here can leave a profoundlynegative impression on the whole environment. Secondly we also need tocreate more awareness about environmental conditions and there are nobetter places to achieve this than our campuses. Some people may argue that Louisiana Tech doesn't need to participate insuch programs for it is not contributing to environment destruction. However this is a completely illogical viewpoint because only there aremany different ways in which colleges and universities contribute toenvironmental problems. Apart from helping the society, Tech would also be preparing its studentsto become more responsible students by implementing these programs. Louisiana Tech can also model its programs after successful substantialityprograms of institutions like Brown University and Dartmouth College etc. It too has a small populationthat regularly participates in abrasive activities including throwing awayfood waste, garbage, papers etc. Noel Perrin in his article on theissue clearly describes the green programs of various universities andcolleges thereby showing their contribution to ecology preservation. Louisiana Tech or any otherinstitution needs to understand that role educational institutions can playin saving the environment. for one we must keep in mind that tech wouldcertainly be a better place if it implements some sound green programsincluding recycling and composting because this university, like otherinstitutions, is simply a replica of cities. universities could also be playing aninfluential role in this connection. The cost of these programs is little compared to its long-term benefits. To become a more socially responsibleinstitution that regularly contributes to preservation of environment forthe sake of its community and the entire society, Tech needs to have somegood sustainability programs. Perrin asserts that allthe top colleges including Yale and Harvard and their educational programswould account for nothing if they fail to do something to reverse theecology destruction process ".
