Admission Essays

Seattle Pacific University (SPU) has set out to achieve the vision of"engage the culture and change the world" in the new millennium. Theuniversity envisages that it will realize its vision through sending outgraduates into the world with greater competence, character and wisdom whowill serve as models to build grace-filled communities and in turn, distinguish their alma mater (Seattle Pacific University, 2000). Such avision is of high personal relevance and appeal to any student from theinternational community, and even more so to me personally as I come fromthe underdeveloped country of Zanzibar. By applying to Seattle Pacific University, it is my hope that I willbe able to make a meaningful contribution to its vision through myknowledge and experience of life in Zanzibar, which could perhaps serve asa valuable example of what it means to 'engage the culture and change theworld.' On the face of it, Zanzibar appears to be an unspoiled paradise of

As such, a university, which goes beyond mere academics toteaching and helping students understand that every individual human beingcan and must play a role in bringing about much needed changes in theworld, is in my view, the best place to study for a profession such asnursing. Though it is now hoped that Zanzibar can grow into one of the world'spremier tourist destinations, the government and society has its work cutout in terms of achieving a change from what has, to date, been a culturethat has primarily been dependent on agriculture to one that is moreprogressive and forward looking. As DavidHollenbach points out, today's society is increasingly becomingindividualistic thereby running the risk of creating socially andpolitically powerless weaker enclaves that will ultimately undermine thevery process of democratization. Issues such as education, job skills, health, infrastructure and basic human rights will all need to be tackledif Zanzibar is to change and develop into a thriving economy By sharing my knowledge of my home country and the issues it faces, Isincerely believe that I will be able to contribute to the SPU communityeffort to bring about much needed changes in whichever part of the world itturns its attention to and focuses on. In addition, it is my belief that Seattle Pacific University, being aChristian University, will also imbibe into its academic and skillstraining the basic human values taught by all religions such as peace, tolerance, justice, compassion and working towards the greater good forall. To avoid the inherent risks posed by suchsocial trends, Hollenbach suggests that religion has an important role ineducation as it can help inculcate into students an individual commitmentto the common good (Hollenbach, 1998). Even though my family background and personal faith lies in theIslamic religion, it is with the above two considerations in mind that Ihave approached Seattle Pacific University for admission into the Bachelorof Science in Nursing degree program. But that pretty picturebelies the fact that more than half of Zanzibar's people live in poverty. The primary reason why I believe that Seattle Pacific University isby far the best choice for obtaining a Bachelor of Science Degree inNursing is its stated vision of "engage the culture and change the world. This is particularly true of those, such as myself, whohope to use their nursing knowledge and skills to benefit third worldcountries with poor health standards and a dire lack of necessaryfacilities. The aforesaid values are particularly important in today's world, which is rife with social injustices, intolerance and terrorism. " Nursing is, or should be, more than just a career option for it isreally a profession that is best entered by people who view it as theirvocation in life.
