To Smoke or Not To Smoke

One of the world's most controversial subjects today is whether or not there should be a ban on the production, sale and use of cigarettes. Even though tobacco has been commonly used throughout the past centuries; cigarettes were not introduced until the early 19th century. Since their introduction, however, cigarette smoking has become a world wide 'epidemic'. Today they are a 160 billion dollar a year industry (Yahoo!c Finance, 2003). Despite their popularity, cigarettes are not as spectacular as they may seem to be. Every year they contribute to death, health problems and economical despair. I believe very strongly in banning cigarette production, sales and consumption. This is a very serious subject and I am sure that this will not be taken lightly. Emphysema, contracted by smoking, is accountable for over 100,000 deaths yearly. Some types of cardiovascular and circulatory diseases include coronary heart disease, which refers to the cholesterol build up inside of the arteries attributable to cigarette smoke inhalation; atherosclerosis, which is the deposit of fatty cells inside of the arteries which leads to strokes, peripheral vascular disease, gangrene, and aneurisms; and Buerger's disease, the acute inflammation and thrombosis (clotting) of arteries and veins, which can also lead to gangrene. The EPA also reports that 7,500 to 15,000 of those cases will result in the hospitalization of the child. While it is true that large amounts of revenue are generated by the taxation of cigarettes, "$32,300,000,000 for the year [in 2002]" (R. Thirty-two billion dollars seems like a sizeable amount of money until you consider that the nation spends approximately, ". Research also shows that around 155,000 lung cancer (via smoking) victims die annually. Chronic bronchitis is defined by the presence of a mucus-producing cough for most days of the month for three months for two successive years. 3,000 nonsmoking Americans die of lung cancer and more than 35,000 ['. Cancer isn't the only disease contracted by smoking cigarettes. The "EPA estimates that between 150,000 and 300,000 of these cases annually in infants and young children up to 18 months of age are attributable to exposure of [SHS]" (EPA. Smoking can also lead to fertility problems in both men and women.
