The Metamorphosis and The Elephant
The Metamorphosis: The Metamorphosis reveals both the strengths and weaknesses inherent in family structures. On the one hand, the family is seen as a closely-knit unit, which faces the ups and downs of life together. This is evident in Gregor's taking on the entire financial burden and responsibility for his family, including his desire to send his sister, Grete, to study the violin at the Conservatory. However, the very fact that Gregor's family is unable to continue treating him as an important part of the family, post his transformation shows the fragility of family ties when tested to the extreme. This tragic aspect of the nature of families is all the more highlighted by Gregor's continued care for his family, and in particular, his sister. All in all, The Metamorphosis shows that human nature and weakness tends to dominate over family ties and feeling. The Elephant Man: The nature of families depicted in The Elephant Man is very similar to The Metamorphosis. Indeed, Merrick's artistic ability and appreciation, more than anything else establish his credentials as a human being. 's mother was either unable to bear the pain of bringing up a son bearing little resemblance to a human being or that she was ashamed. There seems to be a continuum drawn between alienation, loneliness, rejection and death in tracing the period between Gregor's metamorphosis and his final death. The Elephant Man: In this work, bureaucracy is seen as an approach that has no room for compassion. At no point does he ever display either grief or concern about his son's fate and only seems to be bothered by the state of family finances. The Elephant Man: In contrast with The Metamorphosis, city life in this work is presented as a colorful kaleidoscope of beauty and ugliness, pleasure and pain, the rich and the poor, the ruthless and the compassionate, and the idle and the hardworking. Though The Elephant Man makes a strong statement about the fragility of family feeling, it also shows the innate desire of human beings to belong to a loving family. By doing so, The Elephant Man is perhaps reinforcing its concept of individuality by implying that it is up to the individual to choose from all the multifaceted life offered by a city. In a like vein, when Merrick is moved to the London Hospital, his placement in the isolation ward up in the attic mirrors his social alienation and rejection. In The Metamorphosis, the main character, Gregor, obviously has a deep, abiding love for his sister. Gregor changes from a responsible, proud family man to an indifferent and finally defeated one primarily because of his family's rejection and neglect of him whereas the change in Merrick is caused by the kindness he encounters from Treves, Anne, Mrs. Merrick, too, impacts the lives of several people. Samsa since he displays a total lack of feeling for his son post his metamorphosis. Gregor dies with feelings of love and tenderness for his family and Merrick dreams of his mother smiling at him and joining in his recital of poetry.
