Only the educated are free Epictetus 55 AD - 135 AD Discourses
It has been said that the single most important factor in determiningthe future success of an individual's life is education. Yes, one and allmust join the ranks of the higher-educated should one hope to reach beyondthe level of the working poor-after all, that is the American dream. Well, that may be the American dream for some. I cannot begrudgeanyone the hope of living without the dark, looming cloud of povertyoverhead. I witnessed enough of that watching my mother struggle to feed, house, clothe, educate, and nurture five children after the death of myfather. I know what a struggle that can be. Even more, I know theterrible physical and emotional toll that living without that dream canwreak on a soul, especially as a woman. I believe thateach of these experiences build toward a whole that only God understands, and for that reason I try to put my best into everything I do. I can only hope that the committee might be willing to play a part inmy American dream, and all that I hope it will bring to me, my mother, mycommunity, and my love of God. Iunderstand that the road to completing this dream will be hard, bothfinancially and personally; however, I hope to receive this scholarship asa means to help me move forward toward my goal. Although I know that many people deserve this scholarship, I hope thecommittee will keep me in their consideration. Unfortunately, my mother's American dream has left her at sixty-twowith one more year of disability insurance, and no retirement to speak of. You see, my vision of the original American dream is one inwhich the individual's success, hopefully in doing something they genuinelylove, benefits more than just themselves. Over the years, I have developed a passion for event planning andbudgeting-and I have even begun to dream of someday owning my own business. ched helplesslyas her health deteriorated under the strain, until her ultimate spiral intocomplete disability as a result of chronic Lupus.
