Without laws, our society would not function well. In an accident, people who donot use seat and shoulder belts are more likely to be seriously injured. Seat belts save money as well as lives, and we should not all have to haveour insurance rates or public expenditures on health care riseunnecessarily because some made a personal choice. I believe that not using seatbelts has a hidden effect on others as well. People can choose to act recklessly until it affects other people. a crowdedmovie theater for no reason, but other actions affect others as well. If it were legalto sneak into stores and steal money from the cash register, more peoplewould probably do it, eventually causing a rise in prices that would hurteveryone and not just the person robbed. Ifneither the car nor the person were insured, then the public will end uppaying for that medical care. If the driver of the car is insured, the insurance company will have to payfor the needed medical care. If the person's health care pays, then thatinsurance company will have to pay -- raising insurance rates for all. Recently the voters of Massachusetts refused to pass a law requiring peoplein cars to wear seat belts, viewing it as an infringement on free choice.
