Hacking article
In his article "The Internet: Privacy and Security Issues in a NewCommunication Infrastructure," author Ryan Lambe explores the continuingrise of cybercrimes in general, and of computer hacking in particular.Despite laws and enforcement by the FBI, Lambe points out that hackingcontinues. Current laws fail to act as deterrents to computer hackers. Lambe posits two reasons behind the ineffectiveness of laws againsthacking. First, the inherent anonymity of computer technology makes itdifficult to enforce laws and even fosters a sense of "invincibility" amongcomputer hackers. Because the crime is committed from afar, the sensationthat a person is physically committing a crime is significantly lessened. This anonymity also allows hackers to defer any responsibility for their
Lambe charges that by viewinghackers through this "skewed" morality, most members of society are notaware of the damage created by hackers. Lambe writes that under the cloak of altruism, hackers "commoncriminals" who are a major threat to the privacy and security of theInternet. Inaddition, he rightly points out that the public's "image" of hackers isreinforced both through the media and through the lack of concern regardingthe potential damage hackers could cause on the Internet. Byillustrating the fluidity of intellectual property, hackers have done muchto contribute to this change. They have shown that this new technology iscapable of disseminating information, often beyond the original intent ofits creators. My personal thoughts In this article, Lambe makes several valid points regarding how lawsfail to act as deterrents for hackers. He rightly points out that lawsstill have to catch up with the possibilities of this new technology. Lambe's definitions of privacy are closelyrelated to the concept of proprietary knowledge. They continue to challenge the notion that knowledge orinformation can be kept in the hands of an elite, educated or affluent few. While he concedes that current laws are inadequate in addressingthe threats raised by hackers, the author believes that society needs tochange its view of computer hackers. However, while the author touches on the changing nature of privateand public, he does not consider how these changes impact on the phenomenonof hacking itself. It is difficult to predict how concepts regarding private and publicproperty will change. Perhaps it is time for people toevaluate where their individual interests truly lie.
