The firm

It was The Firm that earned him fame and recognition and the book was aninstant bestseller (John Grisham, np). The story and the plot were sointriguing that the Paramount Pictures bought the book rights to be turnedinto a movie and we saw Tom Cruise in the most powerful and dynamic role. However, the Tom Cruise was not the only reason that made the film asuccess. The Firm, despite having minor errors, like the transition of therole of Abbey and the blindness of the protagonist to recognize or smellmafia connection with the law firm where in he was appointed, provides fora very interesting and intriguing story for the readers that they found ithard to put it down before finishing. This paper thus describes the story of the book, the plot and the differentelements of interest in relation to the thesis statement of this report.Afterwards, in the conclusion I would give my own views about the book, thetransition of the characters in the novel and the effects of thesetransitions on the relative characters and on the readers. The Firm (1991) is a book about a young lawyer, Mitch McDeere who hasrecently graduated from the top most law school and is hired by a small law

Of course, the book"appeal[ed] to a sense of paranoia that prevailed in the 1990s" (Furness,2). However, he decidedagainst not telling his wife about the little misdemeanor he had on theisland, as he cannot contain the guilt and shame. But, beyond the instant's importance, the book was indeed very plausible as it had elements that could capturethe attention and soul of its readers. Moreover, he had toprotect his wife too. In case of accepting the offer from the firm, the firm would repay all his loans that he borrowed for his study; theywould buy him a home at a very low mortgage rate, a new BMW, bonuses andthe hefty annual amount of $80,000 as a base pay. At this point he had to decide whetherto tell or not to tell. Hisambition comes first, but his own sense of what is good or bad and his ownethical standards are above to his life long ambition. His wife also works as a schoolteacher, and together theysupport one another, financially and emotionally. He made a deal with the FBI, which included Ray, his brother, getting out of the federal prison, a handsome sum in his bank account, andlife long anonymity. For study he has borrowed loan from his college andsome other student loaning firms and had also worked part time to earn forhis family. Abbey was also confused about the offer, but money matters most toboth of them, so they let aside their doubts and skepticism and went onwith the offer, Mitch going to Memphis again to sign the contract and beintroduced with the other partners of the firm, the Abbey with the wife ofanother partner. Then the hardblow came from the meeting with the FBI agents who made Mitch see thereality. In the Firm, Grisham explores the inside of the corporate America. That the firm for which he was working is linked with mafia andthe accidents of two of the firm's partners was no accident but that thefirm owners killed them.
