Human beings make decisions every moment of every day. Some decisionsare mundane. One decides between sleeping past the alarm, or being onetime for work, whether to eat an apple for lunch or a hamburger and bag ofchips. Unfortunately, some choices hold more consequence than others do.Some decisions are hard to make. Even the simplest preference made over along period can have a deadly result. Ethics are a set of rules thatguide us. They are the principles or standards by which one completes atask. The law embodies the ethical standards of a culture. Religion alsosets forth commandments or codes in which one finds standards of behavior. In the movie, The Glass Shield, the characters must make harddecisions. They make choices based upon needs, self-image, fear, and evenmisguided love. As their situations change, their motivations for eachdecision they make change. JJ, out of a job, decides to cooperate completely with the defense. His downfall is his desire to belong. She is supposed to be impartial, yet the viewer learns that she hasan adopted son, a black boy. JJ stands his ground, butBono falls before the grand jury. He seems to acceptthe reprimand gratefully. He livescomfortably with the perfect family and perfect wife, who would like to goon the perfect cruise. He fails to ticket a black woman becauseshe is flirtatious and attractive. One can only make the best ethical decisionwith the facts that he has and hope that the web does not entangle himbeyond his strength to choose. He tries to justify his actions to himselfby believing that his duty lies with the force. He was slightly wounded;however, his pregnant wife was killed. His problemscompounded when the reality became extreme.
