Titanic
How often are students assigned a homework assignment that they mayactually enjoy' Well, I was asked to watch and review one of my all-timefavorite movies, the 1997 film classic 'Titanic' directed by James Cameron.I remember seeing this movie when it first came out in the theater with myfamily. That memory stands out to me because of the fact that allthroughout the movie the audience all around me, both men and women of allages and various ethnicities, cried during the movie's more intense scenes.Of course, I also loved the 'Titanic' sound track sung by none other thanCeline Dionne. This assignment was just the reason I needed to rent thisclassic again. I have always had an interest in the maiden voyage of theTitanic but this rendition of the story helped open my eyes and made mewant to know more about the ship, the situation and the times. The idea ofwell over a thousand people freezing to death or drowning in the oceanwhile the more affluent passengers are rowed away to safety in lifeboatsthat still had plenty of seating available reminds me of that the world'sinequities are not a new phenomena. This review is not simply an attempt toretell the story of the Titanic. It is more of an attempt
" The actors, not justWinslet and Dicaprio, did an outstanding job bringing the 1920's to life. Of course, I amstill truly convinced that the ship's final hours, especially the climacticsplitting of the ship's hull, was extremely realistic. However, through my research I discovered that thefilm was technically a remake of a much older Titanic film. I also think that the director's addition ofcomputer-generated effects like the sunset silhouette of the ship on itsinitial evening at sea melts digital bits into real life. The main characters played by Leonardo Dicaprio and Kate Winsletportrayed the fact that the ship, like life, has many individual storiesand the combination of those individual stories were in full bloom before, during and after the first shout of "ice berg. ' I was tempted to try to compare the two films to each other forthis review. I feel that Cameron's version of the Titanic's storywas more focused on a melodrama between two fictional characters that fellin love while dealing with the class struggles of the time. Iam definitely taking into consideration that the film received numeroushonors and awards, some of which include: * 14 Oscar nominations: (Best Director (James Cameron), Best Actress (Kate Winslet), Best Supporting Actress (Gloria Stuart), Best Picture, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, Best Original Dramatic Score, Best Original Song, Best Makeup, Best Visual Effects, Best Sounds, Best Sound Effects Editing) * 8 Golden Globe Nominations and 4 Golden Globe wins: (Best Actor (Leonardo Dicaprio), Best Actress (Kate Winslet), Best Supporting Actress (Gloria Stuart), Best Screenplay, Best Original Score (James Horner), Best Original Song (My Heart Will Go On), Best Director (James Cameron), Best Film) I personally believe that James Cameron as the director of 'Titanic'did an excellent job with this film and that it was quite apparent that hepaid a great deal of attention to each minute detail throughout thecreation of this work. Secondary actors like Gloria Stuart who played Rose and Billy Zane whoplayed an evil snob were just as convincing in their roles as the leadswere. The Cameronversion was based on the 1958 movie and book of the same title, 'A Night toRemember. Themovie was a mega blockbuster hit that still can be used as a historicaleducational tool about the actual sinking of the Titanic according toactual survivors. I do not feel they canbe fairly compared other than the fact that both movies were very welldirected considering their time of origin. The special effects throughout the film are in myopinion some of the best ever out of Hollywood and that includes films likemy favorite, 'The Matrix. Considering that the moviewas released in 1958, survivors were probably more readily available thenin the 1990's. This film was a mega hit and was loved by movie goers the world over.
