Are Americans Better Off
The purpose of this paper is to introduce, discuss, and analyze thetopic of Americans now versus one hundred years ago. Specifically, it willstate the reasons Americans are better off, with specific examples.Americans are much better off today than they were in 1904 for a variety ofreasons. We have more technology, more medical understanding, and moreeducation to create better futures for ourselves. Americans lived simplyin 1904, and we live much better today. There are many reasons why we are better off today than Americans wholived in 1904. Technology is one example that is quite important to ourlives today. We use computers in every area of our lives, and they make iteasy to access information, to do our jobs, and learn more about the world. Computers have changed the way we live our lives, and they make a lot ofwhat we do much easier. Of course, computers are not the only technologiesthat we enjoy today; there are many other things we take for granted todaythat people did not enjoy in 1904. For example, there were no televisions, radios, or x-boxes in 1904. In fact, while the telephone had already beeninvented, only about 8 percent of the homes in America had telephones by
They lived more simply, and did not worry about things likenuclear war and terrorism. Life was harder then, andpeople did not have the medicines we do today, like penicillin and manyothers that we use all the time so that we do not suffer. We are much better educated today, too. Families usually lived closer together, and they were tight-knit, especially during holidays and celebrations. Today, we have many advances thatmake our lives easier and more fulfilling, and I think we are much betteroff today than they were in 1904. There was a big gap between the rich and thepoor, and the industrialists did many things with their companies thatwould be illegal today, such as create monopolies, and manipulate the stockmarket. For example, in 1904,there were only 230 murders reported in the entire country (Editors). In conclusion, while life was decent in 1904, I would not want to goback there and live today. People in 1904did not have the medical advances that we have, like artificial hearts, transplants, and many other diagnostic aids, like x-rays and imaging. School may not always be fun, but it is important to making our livesbetter, and we have much more opportunity to do that than they did in 1904. There were not as many health regulations then, so food was notas clean and pure as it is now, and more people got sick from eating badfood. Researchers find new ways to do things and save lives, andthis comes from better education and better educational opportunities. Cancer cures are in the making, and welive longer lives.
