Right now, my company uses Microsoft Access for The company needs information about its customers, its inventory ofproducts, its suppliers, orders, prices of the items, and itemavailability. Until recently, this information was collected and stored inpaper files and folders. Although it was easy to store this information infolders, it also caused frequent delays in accepting the customer orders asit was often difficult to tell at the time of the customer order the priceof the items, the availability of the products, and when it would be Presently with the use of the Microsoft Access databases in thecompany, the company has been able to make many decisions quickly as it canfind the status of the customers, their orders, products, and shipping datein time. My company is also making extensive use of databases for thedevelopment of the predictive models on consumer data. By tracking eachcustomer's relations with the company, the company has successfullyobtained information about several of demographics such as income level, home ownership, appliance ownership, and purchasing histories of severalproducts. Microsoft Access is slow in offering theanswers of the queries. So by obtaining this kind of information from thedatabases, the company is planning to make selective use of advertisementsfor meeting different kinds of needs of customers. The company can also make sure that it provide the MicrosoftAccess Interface on the Network SQL server so that employees are not facedwith learning a new database environment. In addition, the company has made extensive use ofdatabases for developing several kinds of catalogues that it plans totarget to different categories of customers that the company was able toidentify through its database applications. Through the use of databases, it has become quite easyfor the company to track its inventory use and calculate the profits. So databasehas been useful not only to increase the efficiency of the business butalso it has been effective in increasing the sale of the company. Most of the employees working in the company can easilybe trained to identify most of the common entities such as customer, order, inventory, supplier etc. The greatest advantages of the database model is that it is easy touse as it is built on a simple concept of representing information in twodimensional tables. This is a cost effectivestrategy for the company as instead of advertising the same products foreach and every customer, it has now a clear idea of what kinds of productsare usually preferred by what kinds of customers ((Haag, Cummings, andDawkins, 1998). Also, I believe that with increasing datacomplexity, the company should make efforts in providing training to theemployees. By using the database, the company has been ableto avoid a lot of duplication of the paper work processes and has been ableto capture data with much more accuracy and details. The company makes extensive use of database applications in reports, finding different relationships among data, viewing data relations, performing queries for finding several identifiers and creating a nightlyreport about the sales, costs of the products, prices, orders, backorders, and purchase orders.
