WITH OUR EYES SHUT analysis

"With our eyes shut" is an interesting short poem by Spanish award winningpoet, Octavio Paz (1914-1998). The title of the poem can be best understoodin the context of Paz's general philosophy about poetry. Paz believes thatany thing of beauty like poetry must be felt with ears. It need not be seenwith one's eyes, but it should be felt, absorbed, smelled and loved with"To read a poem is to hear it with our eyes; to hear it is to see it withIn other words, he believes that if we like something or love someone, wemust love them for the beauty of their existence. Their looks or theirexternal appearance should be a matter of little or no concern, for oursenses can develop and sculpt them into a thing of beauty. When we closeour eyes, we can no longer actually see the other person, but a beautifulperson or object can be felt and smelled. This the moment when our sensestrade places and our hearing becomes our sight, helping us picture theworld surrounding us, while our eyes become our minds, peacefullycontemplating the significance of these moments. The title of this poem is absolutely in line with Paz's philosophy aboutbeauty and how it can be seen with our eyes shu

During suchmoments, our minds can create almost any image of the world. Paz appears to believe that love and beauty reside within ourminds and when we close our eyes, we give entire control of our senses toour mind, which creates beautiful images for us, and help us see the beautyin the world around us. The image has now become clearer and it has become almost tangible. He has carvedthe image to perfection and his beloved has become a larger than lifefigure for him. In anotherpoem, Response and Reconciliation, the author clearly explains his views onseeing the world through our mind's eye. We become immenseJust knowing each otherWith our eyes shut. The lover has closed his eyes and for the first time feels a certain partof him "light up". He notices that withhis eyes closed, a more powerful and luminous image of the beloved hasemerged from within him. Night by night I carve youWith my eyes shutYou are clear stoneIn the last stanza, he lover's position has become stable. /The world half-opens and we glimpsethe immaculate kingdom,/the pure forms, presences/unmoving, floatingon the hour, a river stopped: /truth, beauty, numbers, ideasand goodness, a word buried /in our century. In the first three-line stanza, the poet is taking a position i. He feels her with his eyes closed and everything about herhas turned her into an enormous figure. As mentioned above, poet's work is well suppliedwith instances of viewing the world with eyes closed, this poem also dealswith the same topic only this time, it focuses specifically on love.
