A Comparison of George Bush and John Kerry in Regards to the Economy
Looking at the opinions and attitudes of both George Bush and JohnKerry has special importance in this election year. While John Kerry isnot officially the Democratic nominee for President, he has obtained enoughdelegates to get the nomination, and it is very unlikely that theDemocratic Party will choose someone else. While it is not impossible,there are no other candidates that have the charisma and character thatDemocrats see in John Kerry and his beliefs for this country. George Bushhas a strong desire to be re-elected and so much has happened during histerm in office that many people either love him or hate him, but few areundecided. This makes for what many think will be a very close election inNovember and it is important to examine the issues to determine where Bushand Kerry really stand on the things that matter most to Americans. For purposes of this paper, the economy will be the focus. It wouldhave been possible to focus on the economy and two other issues, but theAmerican economy is such a large issue that dealing with it could take upmany pages. The economic issuesdiscussed herein will be tailored so that enough information will beprovided about both individuals and their beliefs. Also, some of the biggest economies of the region, such as SaudiArabia and Egypt, are not candidates for any type of free trade agreementwith United States at this time (Sparshott, C08). This would include a one timeexemption for Social Security taxes to employers (Hill, A14). Due to this, there are worries all across thecountry about whether taxes will be raised in the coming year, when the jobmarket will pick up, and what kinds of trade agreements we will have withother countries now that there have been some problems with other nationspulling their support from Iraq. Many people see this as a good examplefor others to follow and Bush has made a lot of progress toward economicties with the Middle East (Sparshott, C08). This will also help to reduce many of thefrivolous lawsuits currently going on against doctors and hospitals andalso expand the medical savings accounts of many individuals (Hill, A14). There isalso pending legislation in Congress that will work to increase thereliability of energy supplies and help cut down on the reportingrequirements and regulations that often raise costs for many businesses(Hill, A14). One of these was an announcement stating that hewished to funnel $250 million into community colleges for worker trainingprograms (Furst, 1D). It has helped boostgrowth in the economy but unfortunately it has not created many new jobs(Hill, A14). It is believed that this is only a reshuffling of a lot of money thatcame from somewhere else, and since it is not new money it will do littleto help those in the state (Furst, 1D). John Kerry has also recently unveiled his plans for jobs forAmericans, and he did this by strongly attacking George Bush and the lossof jobs in this country (Kerry, 2004). Because of this, there are certain specifics that have to be lookedat where Bush and Kerry are concerned and it is important to examine theiropinions and ideas very carefully so that those who are voting in Novembercan come up with a very clear picture of who they actually feel is best forthe country. Jobs Jobs are becoming one of the many defining issues for the 2004presidential campaign. By doing this, Kerry believes that thesebusinesses will have a larger incentive to ensure jobs here in this countryas opposed to going to Mexico, India, and china where labor is much cheaper(Haglund, A12). Kerry continues to blame outsourcing for much of theproblems that this country is experiencing where job growth is concerned(Haglund, A12).
