Wars

There are a number of articles currently being written about the Warin Iraq. It is interesting to look at an article by Niall Ferguson anddetermine whether or not to agree with it. America's current presence in Iraq is chillingly similar to theevents which occurred in 1920 when Britain "drove the Ottoman Turks out ofthe country. The United States has attempted an outright 'regime change'in Iraq, which is comparable to what Britain attempted by being liberators

"Then as now, muchof the violence was symbolic than strategically significant - Britishbodies were mutilated, much as American bodies were at Falluja (Ferguson). "Heeding the Past It is important for all Americans to realize the similarities between1920 and today. He points out that"Iraqis themselves will be the biggest losers if the United States cuts andruns. " These final thoughts about facing reality are easy for mostAmericans to agree with once they understand Iraq's history. It is hopefulthat more Americans and leaders will read this article and perhaps learnfrom history. Conclusion Niall Ferguson's article "The Last Iraqi Insurgency" provided aninformed opinion of the current state of the War in Iraq. " Religious foundations were the origins of both wars, however theysoon "transcended the country's ancient ethnic and sectarian divisions(Ferguson). Fear of the wrong quagmire could consign them to a terrible hell(Ferguson). " During both instances, the opposing forces have"consisted of undisciplined militias (Ferguson). Ferguson's article provided an insightful look at the past, present and possible future for the people of Iraq. " The parallels between 1920 and today also includedemonstrations against the British and Americans, revolts, violence, communication interference, and the taking of hostages. Both President Bush and Senator Kerry need to reacquaintthemselves with the history of Iraq and remember the saying 'those who donot learn from the past are doomed to repeat it'.
