Baseball is as American as apple pie or the stars and stripes. Partof the quintessential American dream involves hot dogs and singing "Take meout to the ball game" in a stadium on a Sunday afternoon. Baseball,football, and other professional sports are an integral part of ourculture, dominating the entertainment industry in many ways. Masses ofdevoted fans will flock to stadiums and sports bars to support theirfavorite athletes, proudly displaying team logos on their bodies, cars, andhomes like a coat of arms. Almost as ingrained in our nation as the statusof celebrity athletes, however, is a controversial debate regarding thatvery status. Many people argue that celebrity athletes are simply gettingpaid too much money. Sports fans will defend that their stadium heroesdeserve to have the world handed to them on a silver platter because of theamazing physical feats of their performances. Others, who may or may notbe sports fans at all, say that some of the salaries received are justoutrageous and that no single person needs to have this kind ofridiculously high income, some proposing that athletes provide no realservice to the people.
