Harry Truman Biography
Harry S. Truman was a simple and honest man. Born in Lamar, Missouri,Mr. Truman said of himself that his child hood was happy, and filled withunique memories which formed the man of character which he became longbefore he was tested in the fires of global war, and post war globalleadership. His impact on world history was much more than simple. Hisfull name, Harry S. Truman, was as simple, as his upbringing, andphilosophy on life. Merle Miller, in his biography of Mr. Truman entitledPlain Speaking started his description of the president in this way. "One week in Independence I didn't talk to anyone who was less than 75years old, and it was one of the pleasantest weeks of my life. People livea long time in and around Independence, and they have long memories. What's more, they seem to have, all of them I talked to anyway, somethingin common with Mr. Truman. They had character." [1] Judge Albert Ridge echoed this assessment of the society which formeda foundation for Mr. Truman's character. "Harry Truman grew up on a societyin which a man's word was his bond. If a man's work could be trusted, therewas no place he couldn't go. And nobody around here ever doubted Harry
He became a man who honored truth, and courage, and on theseattributes Harry Truman built his legacy. Truman rarely saw orspoke to President Roosevelt, who had guided the nation out of the depthsof the depression and into World War II. He only lost one political conflict, which washis first. For ten years Truman worked the land, and became quite asuccessful farmer. Yet again, economic and politicalmisfortune came his way, and when farm prices dropped in 1920, his businessalso suffered until finally closing its doors for the last time in thewinter of 1922. Perhaps President Truman is most famous for the sign which sat on hisdesk after he took possession of the oval office. The strife ofthe civil war had just as large affect on his character as did his motherswisdom. Truman moved to Independence when he was six where he had his firstjob at the corner pharmacy. His family told stories to the author of federaltroops coming to the family farm, and declaring local marshal law. He tamed theirrowdy ways and led them to significant victory in the battles of Saint-Miheal and Argonne. Pendergast was instrumental in hisentrance into the political arena, and Mr. He had beenraised to keep and honor his word, and to respect all people. Truman had the opportunity to gain their trust, and support, but in apublic meeting he burned his bridges with the bigoted organization forgood.
