Hamlet - Act VI, Scene III

             The purpose Act VI, Scene III is to advance the plot of the play. In the scene, Rosencrantz and was sent to seek the whereabouts of Polonius' body. Rosencrantz tells King Claudius that they still have not found Polonius' body. Hamlet is brought forward to face King Claudius' questioning on where Hamlet buried the dead body of Polonius. Hamlet replies, "We fat all creatures else to fat us, and we fat ourselves for maggots". The meaning of Hamlets' response is that, in politics, you must eat others or else others will eat you. Hamlet refers to Polonius being eaten by worms. Hamlet also said, "A man may fish with the worm that hath eat of a king, and eat of the fish that hath fed of that worm." The meaning behind the statement is that Hamlet is foreshadowing the death of his father will be revenged. Hamlet is comparing the thrown of Denmark to a lifecycle of a worm and a fish. Similar to the fish and worm, Claudius kills Hamlets' father to become King which allows Hamlet to kill Claudius to become King. The meaning of the Kings statement, "For like the hectic in my blood he rages, And thou must cure me", is that King Claudius shows his fears of Hamlet. In fear of being killed, Claudius sends Hamlet to England where he will be murdered.
             Rosencrantz plays a small role in Act VI, Scene III. In the scene, Rosencrantz shows his loyalty to the King and disloyalty to Hamlet. The King sends for Rosencrantz to ask him if Hamlet has revealed where he had buried Polonius' body. Rosencrantz replies, "We cannot get from him." Rosencrantz shows that he is loyal to the King because Rosencrantz has Hamlet locked up. Rosencrantz was sent by King Claudius to investigate why Hamlet has suddenly started to behave strangely.
