Human kind has always reached out for the comfort of beauty andaesthetics in every aspect of life. This is evident by the fact that eventhe most basic needs for human survival, such as food, clothing, andshelter, have been elevated to an art form right through human history.Indeed, who can deny that gourmet cuisine, haute couture, and architectureare all fields of art that have afforded a great deal of pleasure over theyears by delighting the human senses. Yet, these fields of art have neverbeen given the heights of recognition or status enjoyed by othertraditional fields such as literature, music, or painting. However, the fact remainsthat it nevertheless constitutes a form of human expression that is nodifferent from any other art form. Indeed, the concurrent individual and collective nature of theworld of fashion makes it a highly intricate and complex art form thatdeserves as much recognition and respect as any other. Consider, for instance,the role that "khadi," the Indian word for fabric made from handspun yarns,played as a symbol in the Independence movement in India. The dynamics of such an effort implies that the field of fashioninvolves a collective effort to create a channel for collective socialexpression. Indeed, there is perhaps only one pointat which fashion departs from the traditionally acknowledged arts, and thatis in its ability to act as a channel for the collective expression ofsocial and cultural values by humanity. Theseexamples, along with countless others, serve to establish the fact thatsucceeding in the fashion world entails accepting the onerousresponsibility of ensuring that individual artistic expression reflects oranticipates the collective social and cultural trend of the times. The responsibility that an individual fashion designer carries toreflect the human spirit gets further burdened by virtue of the fact thatindividual elements in a fashion ensemble are designed by a host ofdesigners in related fashion fields such as jewelry, footwear, and innerwear. In fact,I personally owe my own understanding and appreciation of the human spiritto a lifetime spent in the demanding world of fashion. Fashion's ability to reflect current human values and concernsbecomes highly evident when studying fashion trends in correlation withsignificant political, social, and economic events. And I accept the Nobel Prize for "Lifetime Contribution toFashion" with deep gratitude and humble appreciation of this fact, onbehalf of all the artists and artisans in the entire fashion world. Or, the"Youthquake" that took place in the west during the 1960s, which foundexpression in inexpensive, ready-to-wear fashions that celebrated freedomfrom the rigidity and artificiality of adult social etiquette (Font). It, therefore, gives me the greatest pleasure and untold happinessthat today, the Nobel Foundation has taken the first step towards elevatingthe art of fashion to the levels of recognition that it has alwaysdeserved.
