If Australians are asked to name their heroes and heroines, the people they most admire, the majority of names raised will be those of sportsmen and sportswomen. Today Sara and I will examine the idea of a sub culture in football in which women hold little status. Our focus will be on the National Rugby League. This is because of the recent situation involving the Canterbury Bulldogs and an accusation of gang rape.Footballers are given fame, fortune and power and they are basically labeled gods. If the footballers accept this label they feel a sense of entitlement. They may feel entitled to have sex with whom every they want. There have been reports of coaches encouraging group sex for team bonding within the National Rugby League. "Gang banging is nothing new for our club or the league", he was quoted as saying. The fact that two major leaders commented on footballers outlines how some people in society consider extreme sporting ability to be of higher value then say science is an indicating factor as to why society fails to adequately prosecute athletes accused of crimes particularly rape. On the other hand males are labeled Studs and its is preferable among male peers to be sexually experienced.
