Isamu Noguchi: An Incredibly Notable 20th Century Artist

Isamu Noguchi is an incredibly notable 20th century artist, and quitepossibly one of the most influential Japanese sculptors of our time. Bornin Los Angeles, California, Noguchi was surrounded by artistic influencefrom a young age. His father, Yonejiro Noguchi, was a Japanese poet, whilehis mother, Leonie Gilmour, was an America writer. Born on November 17,1904, at the age of two Noguchi relocated from California to Japan wherehis father continued to reside. After relocating within Japan severaltimes, his family settled in a seaside town in time for the birth of hisyounger sister, Ailes. Noguchi was semi-apprenticed to a carpenter in 1913in order to help rebuild his family's home, where he acquired many of theskills he would later use in his sculptures. A few years later, he beganattending Saint Joseph's College in Tokohama where his family joined him.


In the late 1930's, Noguchi designed his firstplayground equipment sculptures for a park in Hawaii. Shortly after his first exhibition, he dropped out of hismedical studies at Columbia University to devote himself to his art fulltime. Ithas been recreated in both white and black marble, and weighs approximately29 tons. It is 10 feet tall, and one is able to enter through the back,climb stairs, and slide down the spiraling exterior. The swing set hedesigned had multiple-length swings which would swing at different rates,attached to a sloping bright red bar. Rumely also raised money to payfor Noguchi's tuition to Columbia University in New York, where he was tostudy medicine. Additionally, a twin slide sculpture connected by a bridge was created inblack and red for the park. Noguchi would go on to designbridges, sculpture gardens, functional playground sculptures, fountains,theatrical sets, lamps, and furniture. Thisschool would be closed during the war, during which time his friendshipwith the founder of the school, Dr. That same year he was elected a member of the National SculptureSociety and set up his first studio. Samuel Mack, a Swedenborgianminister, who lived in La Porte, Indiana where Noguchi would then attendhigh school. Noguchi focused much of his work on making sculpture not onlyartistically accessible to the public, but also to make his sculpturesfunctional and useful. By 1922, Noguchi would graduate with a high school diplomafrom La Porte High School.
