Response to Betsey's Expedition in "The Flight of Betsey Lane"

Betsey's expedition in the short story, "The Flight of Betsey Lane" bySarah Orne Jewett is one that is to be commended because it sends severalpositive messages about life, dreams, and old age. As a result of herjourney, Betsey has fulfilled one of her lifelong dreams. Her life ischanged as a result of her adventure. In addition, Betsey's friends willalso live vicariously through Betsey's journey. These positive resultsillustrate how one person's actions can influence the lives of others.Betsey's journey was good because it influenced not only Betsey but also One reason that Betsey's journey was good is because it influenced thelives of those around her. For example, it was good because it would giveMrs. Dow something to think and talk about since she was too crippled toleave the farm. Even though she was envious of Betsey at times, she couldappreciate Betsey's desires. Furthermore, we are told, "Almost every onewas possessed of a most interesting past, though there was less to be saidabout the future" (Jewett). Betsey's disappearance was certainly the causeof excitement around the town. It was a great mystery and many had come to

Betsey'sadventure is beneficial to all because of the message it sends about notonly about life and dreams but also old age. We can assumethat if her disappearance caused such a reaction on the farm, that hersudden re-appearance would cause just as much excitement. Betsey's journey is incredible when we consider her age. This point holds more significance becausewe are told that all of the women at Byfleet are "creatures of improvidenceand misfortune, and the irreparable victims of old age" (Jewett). In addition, it teaches us that we should embrace what ouradventures bring to us. Dow might have been envious of Betsey at times, thereis a truth behind her statement. Betsey teaches us that life isindeed short and we should not let anything stand in the way of dreams. Betsey's reaction to the new townaround her reinforces the idea that we all pursue our dream withconfidence. Shedesperately wants to help Peggy's eyesight. Another way that the expedition changes Betsey is how she sincerelywishes to share her experience with her friends back at the farm. She asks the man to come to Byfleet and help Peggy. When Betsey expresses a desire to go theCentennial, Mrs. Many people atthis age would consider their lives to be over and would not attempt toreach a lifelong dream.
