Metallica: The Heavy Metal Band Established in 1981
Metallica, a heavy metal band, was established in 1981 with originalmembers James Hetfield on vocals and guitar, Dave Mustaine on guitar, LarsUlrich on drums, and Cliff Burton on bass. Kirk Hammett replaced DaveMustaine in 1983 and Jason Newsted eventually replaced Burton. The band'ssound is described as a combination of the "new wave of British heavy metalwith the speed and raw sound of MotA¶rhead" (Walser). In the 1980s,Metallica pioneered the "speed metal" (Walser) movement, which gained theband popularity as an "alternative to more pop-oriented styles of metal"(Walser). Their album, "Master of Puppets," released in 1986, earned themthe recognition of being one of the most influential hard-rock bands of The band gradually became a mainstream success when the album,"Metallica," released in 1991, sold over seven million copies. I've been preaching that same sermon for over 15 years. (Walser) Over the years, the band has won six Grammy Awards,the most recent in 2003, for "St. Ulrich writes, "We don't know how the music got out, butsomewhere in the chain of things it was leaked. In one session with Towle, Mustaine, who wasfired from the band in 1983, confronts Ulrich and expresses the "anger andpain he has experienced by being labeled a Metallica reject" (Hay). The band gained worldwide popularity when it decided to takeon Napster, for illegally distributing copies of their music withoutcompensating them at all. Ulrichdefends taking Napster to court claiming that while the band is somewhatconnected to their fans: being connected is very different than doing everything we do because of our fans. The truth is, what we do, we do for ourselves. sbecause of its "reliance on extreme guitar distortion, tritonerelationships and the Phrygian mode" (Walser). This fact did not prevent the band from taking legal action. Of the band's latest endeavors includes a documentary film, "Metallica:Some Kind of Monster. We don't do it for anybody else. In addition, fans catch a glimpse of the band "strugglingover issues of artistic credibility, the Napster controversy and backlashfrom 'selling out'" (Hay). It also demonstrates the band's tenacious spiritto survive despite all the obstacles they have encountered.
