Forms of Love
In Achebe's Things Fall Apart, we see self-love most expressed inthe character of Okonkwo. Okonkwo's accomplishments demonstrate anaffirmation of the strength, values, and beauty of the native Igbo culture. This culture is being systematically destroyed by British colonials.Okonkwo's self-love is viewed as a threat by the British, because herefuses to abandon his native values and customs. When he is killed,Obierika studies his dead form and poignantly expresses the negative impactof colonialism on Okonkwo's self-love and the Okonkwo people, "Our own menand our sons have already joined the ranks of the strangers...The white manis very clever...He has put a knife on the things that held us together andwe have fallen apart," (Achebe 1990, 159-160). Self-love relates to my everyday life for I have practiced beingdirect and open with people for years now. I imagine what it would be like to enjoy their company in anintimate manner in a relationship. In Paul Simon's (2003) Mother and Child Reunion, the song is quitemelancholy.
