Terrorism and the Military: Global Issues
The attacks that took place on September 11th, 2001, on the United States of America, is one event that has had a wide and long lasting impact on the entire world, form the time it took place, till today, and it will continue to have its impact in the future as well. What happened was this: about nineteen men of the terrorist Al-Qaeda group, hijacked four commercial aircraft, and subsequently, crashed two of them into the World Trade Center in New York City, and one into the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia, and the fourth one, which the heroic passengers attempted to rescue from the hijackers, crashed into a field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Almost 3,000 people died from the terrorist attacks, and the 110 floors of the Twin World Trade Centers, five other buildings located in the same area, and four subway stations were completely destroyed. (September 11, 2001 Attacks) The issue here is did this single event in history manage to cast its influence on other events that took place in the United States at a later date, including areas like politics, religion, culture, and so on? Why, for example, did the USA suddenly decide to launch a war against Iraq? Furthermore, the fact that the USA decided to launch a war aga
However, this did not happen; instead, people all over the world do feel that the goodwill and concern that the world felt for the United States has all but disappeared, and in fact, most of the world has turned against the United States for having made use of this type of unique opportunity to launch further attacks on other countries, as is exemplified by the ongoing 'war on terrorism'. As a matter of fact, this was a unique and rare opportunity that was offered to the government and the people of the United States to garner world leadership in order to address several existing problems in the global system. (What does 9/11 have to do with Globalization?)The most important question being raised is this: is US foreign policy since the tragedy of 9/11 leading to a stabilization of the world and the intensification and strengthening of human security, or rather, is it destabilizing the world and unleashing the forces of war, thereby making the entire world and its people increasingly insecure? Is the US government acting for the common good and benefit of the world's people, or is acting merely in a completely selfish and self-interested manner, despite all the negative consequences that a war has unleashed? The impact of September 11th on South Asia and its politics has been disastrous, as has been the impact on Middle Eastern politics. As a matter of fact, in several countries of the world, the September 11 debacle, and its aftermath, as in the war against terrorism, have not succeeded in generating any new hope anywhere in the world; rather, old and appalling enmities and the patterns with which to deal with them appear to have been revived by the United States, and this inevitably means that there is scope and a possibility of future violence, all in the name of politics and affairs of the state. For example, there was, recently, a US$15 billion bailout of the airline industry and also a pending 'economic stimulus' bill that would eventually cost the U. The event also had a significant influence on the general public and the citizens of the United States of America, because it incited in everyone a feeling of heightened patriotism, and a feeling of oneness, although it has become evident since that time that this form of heightened awareness and patriotism was neither permanent, nor was it converted into any form of patriotic acts. The conventional explanation usually offered is that after the Twin Towers were hit by the terrorists, it was but natural that the government of the United States would want to retaliate against the Afghanistan terrorists, and because it was discovered at the same time that Saddam Hussein was amassing weapons of mass destruction in his armoire, the United States decided to extend the war against terrorism against Iraq as well. According to him, the US government was stripping the common man of his democratic rights, while at the same time encouraging campaign contributors and feeding them at the expense of the taxpayers, and also sending working people to fight a war, and leaving many families impoverished and without a real source of income. However, it must be remembered that this theory does not actually fit all the various facts; a document, entitled 'Rebuilding America's Defenses', was written in September 2000 by the neo-conservative think tank named 'Project for the New American Century' or the PNAC, and the date on which it was written reveals that the United States headed by President George Bush fully intended to take over military control of the region, whether or not Saddam Hussein was in power at the time. (Meacher, 5) According to various reports from civic, environmental and consumer groups, today, especially in the United States of America, an increasing number of large corporations of the country are making attempts to push more than billions of dollars in tax breaks, taking up the ruse of the 'war against terrorism' as a valid excuse. inst Iraq made a deep impact on Britain as well; Britain went to war against Iraq the same as the United States did. (Groups Protest Post September 11 Corporate Stance) In the words of John Passacantando, director of Greenpeace USA, today, many large US corporations are intent on looting the US treasury and also "preying on the environment", while at the same time declaring their patriotism and nationalistic feelings. (Groups Protest Post September 11 Corporate Stance) This was but one of the widespread affects of the September 11 terrorist attack.
