The Source of Evil - Macbeth
This essay will depict the character of Macbeth and how Shakespeare was able was to manipulate the character of Macbeth changes during the play. However, much of this essay will focus on the driving force that caused Macbeth to commit such evil deeds. Most critics have argued that lady Macbeth was the single most powerful and soulful driving force. Her whispering in Macbeth's ear, telling him that he will only be considered a man if he kills and her manipulations is a fantastic and degrading aspect portrayed of the female by Shakespeare. Shakespeare is thought to have used a female to convey negative aspects; however, what is forgotten is that Macbeth is a man who is both egotistical and full of greed. Then play begins with Macbeth as a brave soldier fighting for King Duncan. He is shown to be loyal and loving towards his king. We know this because King Duncan had said "O valiant cousin! Worthy gentleman." Perhaps Macbeth is even a relative of the King and if not, he is at least given the status of a noble gentleman who Duncan believes to be as a 'cousin' to him. Macbeth's purity and his positive aspects are acknowledged, even by the captain guard who has also stated, "For brave Macbeth, well he deserves that name" again in
Macbeth knows that the price for being king means that he no longer has any friends and nor does he have the one thing he loved purely and honestly, his wife. "To be thus is nothing, but to be safely thus our fears in Banqou stick deep". After committing another evil and inhuman act of killing Banquo, Macbeth sets to see the three witches. Soon after the murder of the king Duncan, Macbeth is crowned king. Macbeth decides that it is better to be safe than sorry and to kill Macduff's wife and children. However, no amount of power could ever take away the threat of Banquo's children. As far as Lady Macbeth was concerned, she was destined to be queen. The only driving force that remains with him is the thought of being King and even that is not enough. Macbeth's continuance to kill and murder indicated his need to portray to the world that he was a power being and could get away being the devil. The act of murdering Duncan was an easy task; in fact Lady Macbeth practically forced him to do it, telling him that it was the only way to succeed. "The castle of Macduff I will surprise give to edge of the sword his wife and babes". Macbeth seems to continue his killings, he bears no responsibility to his actions, and Lady Macbeth on the other hand commits suicide as she is full of guilt, her hands are bloodied and no amount of water could ever wash away her sins. The murder of King Duncan spoils Macbeth and because of it, he becomes more evil and realises just how powerful he is.
