             The author Paul Johnson has had a long career in journalism including the editorship of the New Statesman from 1965 to 1970. He has written many books of history including A History of Christianity (1975), Civilizations of the Holy Land (1979), Pope John Paul II and the Catholic Restoration (1982), Modern Times (1983), A History of the Jews (1985), Intellectuals (1987), and Birth of the Modern (1992).
             In Civilization of The Holy Land Johnson accounts for the history of Israel from 8000 BC to the time of the Crusades, by showing us the changing structure of Palestine through archaeological remains and the large body of writing discovered, which is proof of such changes. For thousands of years these recorded events and ideas remained buried and undiscovered. Recent excavations have revealed this new study in cuneiform, hieroglyphic and alphabet script, much of it modern, and some pre-dating the Bible. It adds a new element to our understanding of the Bible and a new understanding of the impact of Judaism and Christianity - an impact only to be challenged later by the Moslem control which brought with it Islam. Through this understanding, it is possible to better understand the roots of the religious and political strife, which gave rise to the Crusades, and centuries of conflict. In his book, Paul Johnson shows the pattern of living - and dying - in the Holy Land.
             Johnson starts his book off in Neolithic Jericho. He provides us powerful arguments that this is the first civilized urban area, whereas we learn in our textbooks that the Sumerians established the first civilization. Jericho had the basic fundamentals required to be claimed a civilization: massive walls, towers, pottery, engaged in specialized agriculture, traded sulphur and salt for hardstone, used eating utensils, and had a religion and an art.
