Personal Statement for Marketing and International Business
My intended major at the University of California Riverside is Business, with specialization on Marketing and International Business, specifically. My interest to pursue my studies and establish a future career in International Business, specifically Marketing, was influenced by my exposure to two cultures-Chinese and American cultures. Immigrating in the country 6 years ago, as a high school teenager, I was suddenly exposed to another world, completely different from the country where I came from-China. From the moment I arrived in this country, I realized two things. First, I yearned to learn more about America, and be able to be a part of this dynamic culture. And second, I suddenly realized how much I appreciate my own heritage, Chinese culture, for its equally dynamic and colorful nature. As an immigrant, I am given the opportunity to enjoy two worlds, worlds that have greatly influenced the economy, politics, and even cultures of other nations all over the world. As a Business major specializing on Marketing, it would be interesting and it would be a challenge for me to apply my understanding of American culture, viewed through my Chinese value and belief systems. I know that having grown up
And this unique characteristic of mine will allow me to approach Marketing in an entirely unique way, and this is by fusing both American and Chinese cultures in creating and developing plans and strategies for businesses to use and apply. I have become more involved with my world, and take part in it actively in my own, unique Chinese-American way. For me, it is also important to let people know about my family, who have been a crucial and significant part of my 6-year period of struggling as a newcomer in the United States. Being the only child in my family to come and be educated here in the US, I am grateful to my family, especially my mother, who preserved in me my Chinese values and beliefs despite my being exposed to and having accepted as part of my life the American culture I currently live in and constantly interacts with. I strongly believe that University of California Riverside will equip me with the necessary skills and knowledge to make it as a professional in the field of business marketing, and as a constantly engaging individual of both American and Chinese cultures. To make myself competent and to prepare myself for the challenges ahead, I made full use of Internet technology to develop my communication skills. I have engaged in activities that will hone my skills in verbally and non-verbally communicating messages to people. I am proud to have achieved and be skilled in these accomplishments from what I consider a short period of time. I know that this is a crucial part in marketing, and I consider my learning of the English language for six years as the most challenging yet fulfilling period of my life. Without my mother and my family's memory of having lived in China-that is, without my family-I can never develop my unique personality and be able to recognize and appreciate how my Chinese heritage and acculturation of American society will help me develop an advantage in the field of business and marketing. In this part of my preparation to pursue a career in Marketing, the academic environment I was in helped tremendously in developing in me critically thinking, yet creatively contemplating about case studies and activities that require planning and execution. Given the proper training and guided in the right path towards doing not only right, but the revolutionary and ingenuous marketing, this personal quality of my acculturization to two equally unique and significant cultures will help me, as a marketing professional, to pave the way for American businesses be "on the right track" in the Chinese, and even the world, market. In the same manner that I enjoy the best of both Chinese and American worlds, I can also say that I am thankful to have the advantage of being both creatively- and analytically-skilled in accomplishing my daily activities-characteristics that I consider crucial and imperative for an individual like me who wants to pursue a degree in Business, specializing in the field of Marketing. This personal quality of being able to understand and be part of two cultures is a very appropriate and useful quality of mine, since I recognize that I am in the best position to take advantage of the rapidly increasing business transactions committed between the United States and China.
