Romancing the Stone

Joan Wilder is a prolific romance novel writer based in New York. Although she could portray unbridled passion and all-consuming eroticism in her novels, she lives in a dull and dreary life in Manhattan. All that changed when she got a packaged from her dead brother-in-law and the strange thing about the package was that it came all the way from Columbia. Things turned topsy-turvy when Wilder's sister Elaine called her from Columbia and told Joan that unless she brings the package containing a map, her kidnappers will not release her. Like all compassionate heroines, Wilder flies off to Columbia to seek the release of her sister but instead got lost in Cartagena.Wilder's character is portrayed by Kathleen Turner, one of Hollywood's well known actresses and true to form, playing Wilder she presented herself as lost and unsure of in life and looking for something more or similar to her steamy novels. Joan Wilder is presented as someone wanting out of life what she can put to pen and paper but in real life it is so much different. Wilder is not your typical all-American pretty girl but her persona is that of someone not beautif

"In the end, Wilder's character is a roller coaster ride of emotions and portrayals that takes the viewers from melancholy to extreme excitement. Wilder as an American heroine in Romancing the Stone fit into all the elements of the perception of the heroine character: attractive in a way (Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder!), nicely dressed (for a tropical climate), modest or unassuming (considering she's lost in Cartagena), independent (she is her own person with Colton's help at times), sensitive (she save her sister and fell for Colton, didn't she?), funny (it's a romantic comedy!) and a damsel in distress that lived to tell her tale. ul at first glance but whose beauty grows on you or her attractiveness comes out the longer you look at her. Of course this is understandable considering with the heat, monsoon rains and tropical climate of the locale, any red-blooded American used to city living would find herself in squalor and irritated with extreme heat and extreme rains! The Wilder character showed modesty with a hint of "cluelessnes" especially in the situation presented to her. The New York scenes find Wilder dress in typical New York casual fashion but not overly haute couture and her clothing when she was in Cartagena seemed out of place and at times ragtag and soiled. The big bonus Wilder got eventually was when her man came back surprisingly the "kiss, make up and ride into the sunset" scene proved once again the sensitive and true romantic nature of the heroine. Her attraction lies in the deep character hidden in her being and the temperament comes mature in her novels but basically a passerby would immediately give an impression that Wilder is just one of the boring women you see everyday in downtown Manhattan. The true adventure of Wilder begins at this point and a smorgasbord of persona is revealed in various scenes. Others may find Wilder's character as a heroine lacking substance but if one is just out to have a good view and relaxation, Wilder's persona takes us from the real word and temporarily brings u to a journey of witty comedy and whirling romance - something we all dream of being a heroine or having a heroine for our own!. Wilder exposed the sensitive and caring lover to Colton especially in her unguarded moments. The independent streak came out when she is shown dealing with - or escaping from - the lowlifes from the villainous police chief Zolo to twosome bandit Ralph and Ira. She may be in her element in New York but when it comes to Cartagena her unassuming character had to be on guard that in order to be able to get to her sister, Wilder had to take on the aid of Jack T' Colton, a blustery character seeking opportunity however and whichever way he can. Considering Romancing the Stone is a romantic comedy in a true American genre, there is no want in the hilarious and funny side of Wilder especially in scenes where cliffhangers are shown - such as when Wilder pleads for Colton's help and he can't decide whether to let go of the crocodile or help a "damsel in distress. But like most entertaining books or movies, Wilder "has been there and done that" - and she was able to live to tell her tale albeit through another one of her juicy novels.
