Syriana: An Attempt on Geopolitical Issues Related to Oil and American Involvement
The movie Syriana is considered a bold attempt by the director Stephen Gaghan to delve into geopolitical issues related to oil and American involvement in the whole issue. The movie looks at the behind the scene events of Washington, involvement of different corporations in the world politics, the situation in the oil fields of the Persian Gulf, the political involvement of US government in the Middle East and other region and other such complex issue. Considering the complexity of issues at hand the movie attempts to explore all of them with help of multiple storylines woven together. The movie is based in an unnamed oil-rich Gulf state. The movie's plot kicks off with the intention of Prince Nasir Al-Subaai of the Gulf State to change the business relationship of sate with US firms with respect to oil. In an attempt to challenge the status quo the prince granted drilling rights to a Chinese firm over a Texas energy giant. To counter the move by the Prince America exercises its muscle power and vows to fight the prince with the help of CIA agent Bob Barnes, the character played by George Clooney. In an attempt maintain the status quo and counter the reforms the agent is sent in to eliminate the prince. Apart from the main chara
The movie provides a new perspective to Americans as United States is now more involved in the region after Iraq war and current tussles with Iran. "We have been living on a great fossil fuel inheritance accumulated during more than 500 million years. The character while talking to his wife mentions the the same Saudi Prince would end up being like Mossadegh from Iran in '52. Some also hold the view that if Americans are going in countries like Afghanistan & Iraq for the sake of establishing democracies and not for oil then US has so far failed in establishing democratic governments in those countries. Demad for oil in North America and Canada is more for transportation than for heat and power while the opposite is true for the rest of the world. There will be a sharp decline in supply of oil because demand is constantly increasing whereas the speed of finding or exploring new oil sources is not matching that. Oil Dependence in America & Search for AlternativesOil can be considered a source of energy that has become the indispensable part of the lives of most Americans. Aspects of TerrorismThe movie also looks at the complex issues of supposedly organized Islamic terrorism as manifested by the likes of Hezbollah. "The challenge is that energy needed to support future growth will far exceed the amount the United States can produce on its own. "Corruption is what keeps us safe and warm. One of the characters in the movie uses the death of his young son to advance his career showing the level at which people can stop to further their own agendas on personal, national or global level. Corruption is why you and I are here in the white-hot centre of things instead of fighting each other for scraps of meat out there in the streets. The peoponents of this theory site the example of USA that attained its peak in the 1970 after being one of the biggest oil producers of the world.
