Timeless Love
The harsh nature in which loves consumes us can also contain our heart and soul for an eternity. Gabriel Garcia Marquez's Love in the Time of Cholera confronts what is held to be the most sacred of human emotions as its primary theme and source of conflict. This emotion, of course, is love but Marquez's take on it in is anything but simple. Marquez seems to be acknowledging throughout the the novel that love does indeed exist. He presents love in so many different ways that it makes it tough to come to a conclusion on the nature of love, but through careful analysis of the work one can build a strong case for the existence of love. In addition to dealing with love in all its countless faces, the reader must also be willing to deal with those things which are an intangible part of love and passion: human institutions such as marriage and courtship, and both the trivial and major problems that are the unavoidable burdens of love. In contrast, her life as wife to Dr. The variety of women he romances is stunning, but what is even more stunning is the fact that one woman still holds his heart the entire course of his life. The second major theme in the novel is that of death and aging. Florentino "behaved as if he were the eternal husband of Fermina Daza, an unfaithful husband but a tenacious one" (197). Transito instructs that while he must remain persistent, he must not overwhelm Fermina with too much of his affection and passion. Florentino experiences terrible anxiety and dread whenever he contemplates his approaching demise. Thus, Lorenzo Daza's mindset and guidance for his daughter, while perhaps effective in raising her social status, does little to bring her true happiness. Transito Ariza, and the effect of her advice and influence on Florentino displays even more evidence for the existence of love. This does not diminish Florentino's yearning for Fermino at all and this speaks in favor of the point that a higher emotion than simple lust exists in his life and this emotion can only be love. Amour is unwilling to give himself to the clutches of decrepit old age and his refusal sets the tone that many of the others, particularly Florentino, take regarding death. This indicates that death can be held at bay only by the power of love. Florentino attempts to use purely physical sexual encounters as way to deal with the pain of his separation from Fermina, but he discovers that lust, no matter how many times it is acted upon, is no substitute for true love. It is only at that late point in their lives that they, through the force of their love, are able to cast aside any fear of death and insist that they will continue to sail the river "forever".
