Oscar Mayer's Marketing Works

The purpose of this paper is to introduce, discuss, and analyze the topic of American marketing. Specifically it will discuss why Oscar Mayer does a good job in marketing and advertising. Oscar Mayer could be one of the most successful advertisers of all time, because they have expanded their brand awareness throughout the world. Ask just about anyone, and they can tell you about the Weinermobile, or the catchy jingle "I wish I was an Oscar Mayer Weiner." In fact, the Oscar Mayer wiener jingle is one of the twenty most successful advertising jingles of the century according to Ad Age magazine (Locke, 2001, p. 68). Then of course is "My bologna has a first name...." All of these marketing innovations add up to a company that has been around for over 100 years, and is still one of the most popular and successful brands today.The Oscar Mayer Company, now a subsidiary of Kraft Foods, began as a meat market in Chicago in the late 1800s. By 1900, the three brothers were so successful they made home deliveries of their meats. Afraid other meat markets would copy their recipes and success; they branded their meats in 1904, and were one of the first meat companies to do so. The company's marketing has been innovative and forward thinking for decades, which is one reason its marketing is so effective. The company is also quite adept at finding the attributes of their products and enhancing them. This is especially creative marketing because most people recognize that hot dogs are actually made of less than desirable leftovers in the meatpacking process, and are full of nitrates and other preservatives that are not "wholesome" for kids or anyone else. This understanding of today's consumers is apparent on the company Website, which offers commercials in Spanish as well as English to reach the growing Hispanic consumer market. This conformity in advertising and in buying what others seem to like ties into a general liking of a brand's advertising. The Oscar Mayer brand is a perfect example of effective marketing and in-depth consumer study. In 1906, the company was one of the first to volunteer for inspection by the newly formed Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS). How have they managed to do this? They have used marketing tactics effectively and repeatedly throughout the company's long history, and that has led to their strong brand loyalty and support. They also introduced deli-style lunchmeats in 2003. Especially when everything else is equal, it can tip the balance in many brand choice decisions. Another one of the reasons Oscar Mayer is so successful is because they have managed to convince consumers their hot dogs and other foods are "good, wholesome food for kids. The brand uses conformity to convince people they need the brand, and it has worked in their advertising for decades. The company knows its products, its consumers, and marketing so well that they have created an advertising legend that simply will not die. In 1924, the company created the first sliced and wrapped bacon package, and in 1929, the company was the first to wrap their hot dogs with the company logo along with the U.
