LABOR UNIONS

Unions started to make their appearance in the 1600's and the 1700's. The first unions were called guilds. They were made of carpenters, cabinet makers, and cobblers. Workers played a large part in the struggle for independence. For example, at that time, workers wanted to live better lives by having shorter hours and higher pay at work. And so, in 1794 in New York, printers were the first to go on strike. After them, many more followed. Cabinet makers went on strike in 1796, carpenters in Philadelphia in 1797, and so on. In the beginning of the 1800's, unions' attempts to try for better working conditions either through talking or if it goes that far- through striking, were becoming more common. About twenty years later, unions became more and more interested in reducing the working day from 12 to 10 hours. They also became interested in the possiblity of them joining together to reach a goal they all had. Although their first efforts didn't work out, they still showed that workers were beginning to realize the problems with their working environments and The Nation Labor Union was formed in 1866. It was actually an organization of local

This law requires the Secretary of Labor to enforce regulations and safety and health standards to protect employees and their families. But, its strikes didn't always go on as they had in previous years. In fact, they may be working against them in some cases. Workplace safety and health laws make regulations that take care of any possible injuries workers may have, as well as specific illnesses. Through the years, the minimum wage increases, to go along with rising prices and other such things that raise costs of things we buy. It establishes minimum wages, overtime pay, recordkeeping, and child labor standards. It persuaded Congress to pass an eight hour day for Federal workers. The Contract Work Hours and Safety Standards Act sets overtime standards for service and construction contracts. First of all, as union wages go up, taxe bases for our communities get stronger. Some pay cuts then reduced the amount in the compensation package, but actually, most CEO's got pay raises. And so, the Knights of Labor soon declined. Summing up, unions help make sure that working people's issues are put first and that workers aren't to blame for everything. Another reason for decrease in union memebership is that the standards unions set for themselves are not necessarily working for them. With a union, discrimination is limited because union contracts ensure that all workers are treated fairly and equally. Therefore, many products made by unions are a lot more expensive to make it possible for the unions to pay their workers.
