Kurdish Workers Party: Terrorists before 9-11 was Even a Thought
Terrorism is a word that can strike fear in the most stoic person. For most Americans the word is associated with the events that occurred on 9-11 but for the rest of the world terrorists have been promoting their beliefs and ideas through acts of violence for many years. One of the most widespread terrorist organizations in the world is the Kurdish Workers Party. The Kurdistan Workers Party is designed to fight for the right to govern the land that has been denied to them by the Turkish for many years. There are currently more than 30 million Kurdish population members who have no state which also strips them of any cultural, linguistic or political rights as are enjoyed by the rest of the world. For years members of that population have attempted to force the world to recognize their plight through the use of terror and violence. The members of the terrorist group call themselves the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). Over the past few years the party has condoned and carried out acts of terrorism including the execution slayings of non-combatants as part of its statement against the current government and the civilians that it feels are supporting that government(Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) http://www.fas.org/irp
* 1991: After Persian Gulf War, northern Iraq's Kurdish area comes under international protection. * 1988: Iraqis launch poison-gas attack, killing 5,000 Kurds in town of Halabja. The leaders as well as members of the party believe that they are doing little more than trying to right a wrong of history and trying to gain what should have been rightfully provided to them many years ago. Conducted attacks on Turkish diplomatic and commercial facilities in dozens of West European cities in 1993 and again in spring 1995. As long as PKK is funding itself through illegal activities and perpetuating violence upon innocent civilians it must be viewed as dangerous and it is indeed a terrorist organization in every sense of the word. Turkish forces fight the PKK guerrillas, who also establish bases across the border in Iraq, for years. What separates terrorists from other political or social organizations in the world is the method by which they promote their beliefs or messages. This was aimed at Turkey for Turkey was the government refusing to provide the freedom of the Kurds to be their own body. In a report called the The Mass Character of our Party and the Front", dated 1988 the party detailed its objectives to include:"Mass activities (Press meetings, raids, occupations, etc. SOURCES: Reuters, World Almanac, staff reports PKK AND TERRORISMIn the discussion of terrorism and terrorist acts the leaders of the PKK often deny that such a word should be associated with anything that the party does. The leaders of PKKK insist that the organization originally sought the support and aid of imperialist nations worldwide to little avail. * 1979: Turmoil of Iran's revolution allows Kurds to establish unofficial border area free of Iranian government control; Kurds do not hold it for long. First it was the ASALA (Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia), claiming the lives of innocent diplomats and their families.
