Article Examination - Iraq War
The first article that this project critiqued was an article that is against the war in Iraq. The article title is An unnecessary war.(US-Iraq conflict). It was written by an author named Stephen Walt. The major thesis of this particular article was that the war is unnecessary. In addition there is a sub-thesis in this particular article that believes the United States citizens were lied to so that they would support the desire by Bush to go to war against Saddam Hussein. The author points out the fact that when Bush decided to go to war in Iraq he provided a constant and relentless campaign to gain the favor and approval of the American citizens to carry out that desire. He provided speech after speech declaring Saddam as a terrorist threat. Even more important he presented Saddam as a nuclear threat to not only the United States but to the rest of the world as well(Walt, 2003). Those who were in support of the war according to the author asserted the claim that Saddam was like a loose cannon in a mine field of military ability. His development of nuclear weapons that Bush and others insisted was occurring would provide Saddam with the ability to destroy the world(Walt, 2003). In addition the people that supported the war
"The second opinion of this article is that the belief that Saddam's past behaviors provide proof that he cannot be trusted with regard to nuclear war is based on faulty logic and distorted accounts of history. While we may not agree with his political beliefs or his regime it is not prudent to claim he was erratic in the wars he did start and take part in because that is not the case. One of those statistically backed facts is that at the time the article was published 71 percent of Americans supported the president's decision to go to war(Morin, 2003). The credentials of the authors are that they have been experienced in political writings for many years. "The article goes on to state that the Americans who support it along with the politicians who support it believe it is not only in the best interest of the world from a military standpoint but it is also in the best interest of the people of Iraq to be freed from the Saddam regime and rebuild a democratic government. The second article is based mostly on opinion not fact. Support for going to war with Iraq surged to 71 percent after Bush's nationally televised speech, up from 59 percent a week ago, according to the poll. It is difficult to distort history because the facts and figures are in black and white for all the world to see. MY OPINIONAfter examining both articles and working to separate the facts and opinions I came to the conclusion that the author I agree with most is Steve Walt. The second article, 71% of Americans Support War, Poll Shows; But Overseas, Attitudes About Invading Iraq Continue to Be Overwhelmingly Negative by Richard Morin, shows a leaning in favor of the war at least through its research of the polls and American people(Morin, 2003). For that reason alone, he has to go(Walt, 2003). Security Council support for war, eight in 10 oppose military action against Iraq(Morin, 2003). CONCLUSIONBased on the evidence and information provided in each article at this point I tend to agree with Walt.
