The Bronx: Community Assessment

The Bronx is located in the state of New York and is one of the five borough of New York City. It is named for Jonas Bronck, a Swedish sea capitan and is one of the most populated areas of New York City, with a population of 1.35 million people. (US Census Bureau). It is generally an urban local.Housing in the Bronx is not unusual of the typical urban American city. There are over 502,000 housing units located in the Bronx. 21% of the residents of the Bronx own their own home and 79% rent either an apartment or a house. Because of the large population, only 6.8% of the available housing units are vacant and available in the Bronx. Therefore, finding a suitable place to live in the Bronx is not very likely. The larger population makes housing less available.There are several different cultural groups that live and work with the borders of the Bronx. Approximately 23% of the Bronx population is white or Caucasian, 32.1% of the population is black or African American, .04% of the population is American Indian, 3.2% of the population is of Asian decent, .01% is Hawaiian or Pacific Islanders, and 52% of the population is of Latino or Hispanic decent.


The greatest contributing factors to the decrease in deaths were a reduction in heart attack deaths (down 14% from 2003), other heart disease deaths (down 3%), and reductions in deaths from HIV/AIDS (down 12%), colon cancer and homicide (both down 9%). The State University of New York Maritime College has attracted broad recognition as a national leader in maritime education. Manhattan College offers undergraduate programs in the arts, business, education, engineering, and science. The College of Mount Saint Vincent is a Catholic liberal arts college located Riverdale and is under the direction of the Sisters of Charity of New York. In addition to the various languages, many different beliefs and religions are practiced in the Bronx. The main campus of the prestigious Albert Einstein College of Medicine, part of Yeshiva University, is in Morris Park.
