About 90% of the ozone is in stratosphere, a layer between approximately 10 and 50 kilometres above the earths surface. The remaining 10% of the ozone is in troposphere, which extends from the Earth's surface up to about 10 kilometres.Ultraviolet radiation is a part of the sun of wavelengths. UV is made up of wavelengths less than 280 Nanometers. UV is highly dangerous to plants and animals, but is absorbed by stratospheric ozone and does not reach the earth's surface. Ozone absorbs much of the shorter wavelength radiation, but this absorption weakens as larger wavelengths of UV approaches. Plants and animals are particularly affected by the larger wavelength of UV. UV effects to humans are reddening of the skin (erythema), development of skin cancer, cataracts and suppression of the immune system in the long term. Ozone absorbs very little of this part of UV. Increased UV radiation at the surface could have great negative impacts on human health, fish populations, and many land and marine ecosystems. Depletion is especially severe over Antarctica in spring, causing the highly publicised "ozone hole". Stratospheric ozone plays a beneficial role by absorbing most of the biologically damaging ultroviolet rays. Cleaner cars and fuels, new kinds of gasoline nozzles, enhanced vehicle inspection, and other programs will be made during the next ten years. Increased UV radiation can also influence agricultural productivity and cause deterioration of synthetic materials such as plastics. The data is then used to make a forecast of ozone levels for the next day at many points around the country. Ozone depletion in the upper atmosphere is the result of human-produced chemicals, such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and halons. At the Earth's surface, ozone comes into direct contact with life forms. The things that people are working on to replace are refrigeration and air conditioning, solvents cleaning, foam blowing, fire suppression and explosion protection, and aerosols. In humans and other animals, effects of UV may include damage to the immune system, increased chance of getting serious sunburn and cancer. However, CFCs and halons last for a long time in the atmosphere, so it will be decades before the ozone layer completely renews itself. In plants, exposure to enhanced UV radiation can prevent the process of photosynthesis.
