             This essay will talk about two very powerful and influential men. Although they lived centuries ago they have remained in the hearts and minds of people throughout the world. Jesus and Socrates lived in different times but both men were similar in that they firmly stood for what they believed to be true even when their lives were threatened. It was this display of courage that connected these two powerful men
             Socrates lived in the years 469 to 399 B.C. He was a noted philosopher who went around teaching people by his words. Although he had contact with the intellectuals of his time he sought to be different from them. He was often associated with men who opposed the politics of the time. Socrates married late in life and had three children. He mostly lived a life of poverty by choosing to spend his time teaching. By encouraging people to think for themselves he wanted them to be more aware of their individual power of choice in intellectual and moral decision-making. Most of Socrates teachings were concerned with matters of logics, morals, and education. Although it was sometimes offered Socrates refused to accept any fees for his services. In the year 399B.C. Socrates was brought to trial on charges of denying the gods who were recognized by the state and for the corruption of the youth. It was only a small majority of people who wanted the death penalty. Socrates himself refused to be exiled as an alternative to this conviction. He was detained for one month in prison before he was finally poisoned to death.
             Jesus was a great religious figure from whom Christianity stems. He was a known carpenter who spent his early days growing up with his mother Mary. He developed a deep sympathy for people that were underprivileged, sinners, or sick. As a man he chose to spend his time preaching and teaching the people of his land.
