fragments

FRAGMENTS Fragments, is an experimental performance that is not based on a specific plot or theme, so the building up to a major climax through out the performance was not very clear, however each scene had a minor climax. People who watched the performance would realize that it had a lot of tempo and rhythm. Tempo and rhythm were very clear in the performance, at times it was slow and at other times it was fast. Naji used a lot of ways to speed up the tempo. For instance there was no pauses in between scenes. There was always something happening on stage, the character Lina and her twin were always in between the scenes. They kind of linked one scene to another and in the same time they were adding a new impression, they added to the visual picturization of the stage at times, for instance when the actors where dancing between the audience they were dancing behind they wall in their boxes. In the performance their were a lot of scenes and each scene was consistent with a different tempo and rhythm. There was the twins scene, hands scene, aquarium scene, the metamorphisis scene, wolves, chains, bags, dream, and name scene. Speed varied at times from slow to fast and t

They moved from one area to a stronger one, which can also be considered as a climatic scene, because their movement was very powerful and shocking to the audience. The style and form of the play had a lot of tempo, and rhythm and that was proved by the full attention people were giving in the performance. In the dream scenes the text being read was very clear and the music didn't overlap at anytime. There was a time in the scene were the speed was faster than the rest of it. There were a lot of factors that affected the tempo of the performance. That slow beginning enabled the audience to adjust their eyes and concentration on what is happening on stage and it helped in capturing their full attention. There was no time for the audience to get bored, because first of all there were a lot of ideas and subjects that were being acted out, such as wolves, survival, dreams, fear and pain. The metamorphosis from fetus (weak body position) to wolf (strong body position) was also slow, and this can be considered as an external technique which affects climax. All 3 were walking in the same pace, 2 of them were in the water and the other actor was walking in between the audience. They started of dancing in a normal speed and then they started dancing in very slow motion and then to fast again, and then they froze with the chains. In Jerusalem scene there was a very interesting dialogue that was said by 3 actors, all 3 actors were saying the same text but at different times. In the wolves scenes the tempo and rhythm was in general very fast, although sudden changes of speed was used, like for instance in the fight scene that took place between the audience the fight started of very fast and then their movements suddenly became in very slow motion. , they said it in different tones in some words they would go up and on other words they would go down. The fight that took place between Athdark and Cambysis the music was building up until it reached a very high level and covered what Cambysis was saying at times. In the dream scenes the tempo and rhythm was very slow in comparison to other scenes in the performance as a whole.
