Department Productivity Report
Productivity is probably the most important factor when determining an economy's health degree. It is generally defined by "the amount of output per unit of input".1 Economic welfare depends on the rate of productivity growth. As Governor Ben S. Bernanke stated in 2005, "the most important economic development in the United States in the past decade has been the sustained increase in the rate of growth of labor productivity, or output per hour of work".2Infinity Furniture is a company specialized in manufacturing and selling chairs and other custom furniture (like contemporary chairs, classic chairs, tables, benches, bar stools and lounge chairs) for hotels, restaurants, banqueting halls, and casinos. Although the company offers good quality custom furniture, with a price to match, the forecast sales objective for the previous year has not been attained, as only 50% of the manufactured goods have been sold. Given the fact that the goods' quality and price are equitable, that the demand has not been fully covered, it is clear that this negative situation can only be put on the Sales Department's back, on the sales agents respectively. In other words, there is a problem, or certain problems, among the sales Department's employee
For such an analysis, the human resources portfolio must be established, according to which the employees are grouped in a performance-potential matrix that has the following categories: problem-employees, predictable-performance-employees, high-performance-employees, and the so-called "question marks". Another solution would be reorienting them towards other positions in the company, positions they would be more suitable for, if any. The problem is that the sales agents were able to sell only half of the manufactured goods. Personnel's productivity depends on three factors: "Will", "Can", and "May". In some situations, the entire recruitment process must be started all over. Strategically speaking, problem-employees present a very high risk for achieving the company's goals. A closer look at the five problem-employees' activity report, professional and educational background shows that they had no previous experience in the sales field, their educational situation does not recommend them for this kind of job, and also, they do not seem to have any important skills and abilities that a sales agent should have. The three "question mark"-sales agents are clearly working bellow their capacity, which means that they are probably unsatisfied either with the work conditions, their wages, benefits, or with other causes. The cost-benefit analysis regarding these employees showed that their wages are three times higher than the profit they bring to the company each month. Problem-employees are those employees, with or without management responsibilities, whose performance is completely unsatisfactory. "Can" is related to the individual's physical and spiritual ability, skill, experience, education, which qualify a certain individual for a certain job. They show very low performance and self-development potential. The investigation showed that five of the sales agents are problem-employees, five of them are predictable-performance-employees, three of them are question marks, and only four of them are high-performance employees. In the Infinity Furniture company's case, the Sales Department is run by a sales manager that has 17 employees working as sales agents in charge with closing deals with actual and potential customers for the company's furniture items.
